Mifepristone is an anti-progesterone medication used as the first step of a medical abortion. It works by blocking progesterone, the essential hormone required to maintain a pregnancy. Without progesterone, the uterine lining breaks down and the pregnancy detaches from the uterine wall.
What is Misoprostol (Cytotec®)?
Misoprostol is a prostaglandin medication taken 24 to 48 hours after Mifepristone. It works by softening the cervix and causing the uterus to contract. These contractions physically expel the pregnancy tissue from the body, similar to a heavy menstrual period.

Who Can Use Medical Abortion?

To ensure a safe recovery and prevent infection, follow these precautions for 14 days after the procedure:
- Hygiene: Use maxi-pads only; do not use tampons or menstrual cups.
- Activity: Avoid vaginal intercourse, swimming, and soaking in baths.
- Medical Check: Follow-up tests (blood, urine, or scan) are mandatory to confirm the abortion is complete.
- Warning Signs: Seek immediate medical help if you soak two maxi-pads per hour for two hours or develop a high fever.
